Q: What kinds of instruments do you play?

A: Banjo, mandolin, guitar, hammered dulcimer and jaw harp

Q: Can you tell us about the instruments you play and where they come from?

A: Yes–just request my educational program. Between songs I talk with the audience about how instruments from Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East came to America. Audiences learn:
  • Where each instrument comes from
  • How each is used in American folk music
  • Each instrument’s technique and sound
  • Number of organization of strings on each
  • Names of familiar related instruments
  • Call-and-response singing
  • How to yodel
  • The Philadelphia Mummers’ strut
  • Geography, history and tolerance

Q: What regions do you work?

A: All over – from New Hampshire to West Virginia, Southern states, Canada & the Caribbean. Most of my shows are in Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

Q: How do you sound like an entire band when you’re only one person?

A: With pre-recorded bass, drums, and back-up vocals–all performed by me–you get a full-band sound at a one-musician price. To listen to a demonstration of this full band sound, please download the FREE CD “I Love Mento”.

Q: Do you have any handouts that I can use to promote the show in advance?

A: Yes, on the press kit page, you can download color 11X17 posters, 81/2X11 flyers and photographs as well as a performance announcer – a handy fill-in-the-blanks press release to announce your event to the community.

Q: When I hire you what do I need to provide to accommodate you?

A: I make your job easy before and after the show. I bring my professional PA system so you won’t have to struggle with wires and microphones. All I need is one grounded electrical outlet within 20 feet and, for outdoor shows, a dry, shaded performance site. No PA or electricity is needed for strolling performances.
